Getting sick while pregnant

Got  a terrible cold and worried if your baby would be affected?

Well,don't worry. Cold, however uncomfortable is minor illness caused by a viral infection and will not affect your pregnancy. But, yes the medicines such as cold tablets, decongestants and antihistamines can affect your pregnancy and so do not take these or any other medications like Aspirin or Vitamin C without asking your doctor. As it is there is no cure for cold, medications only offer relief from the weary symptoms.

Remember that your immune system is running low when you are pregnant and hence one or two episodes of cold will be common during these 9 months.

How to take care of cold

Rest

Take REST at the first appearance of the cold or even the first sneeze. Take  a little extra rest to get rid of the cold before it raises its ugly head.
Lie down with an extra pillow to keep your head elevated, this helps you in breathing easily and sleeping.

Eat 

Eating properly and nutritious food helps you big way in combating cold. Eat whether you feel hungry or not. Include some citrus fruits or juice (Oranges, lemon) in your diet to get Vitamin C. Do not take Vitamin C supplements without your Doctor's advise.
Eat fresh garlic first thing in the morning and drink decaffeinated tea or broths.

Drink

Drink a lot of fluids, at least one cupful an hour. Drink grapefruit juice or fresh orange juice. Chicken soup is also good for comforting against cold symptoms and replenishing fluids.

Saline sprays

Use saline sprays to clear stuffy nose. Keep a humidifier in the room to keep the nasal passages moist.

Gargle

Gargle with hot salted water for relief from sore, scratchy throat.

Fever

Let the fever go away naturally through cold baths, sponging with tepid water, cool beverages, wearing light bed clothes.

Steam

Inhale steam to relieve nasal congestion. You can add a few drops of eucalyptus oil, turmeric to it.

When to worry?

Do not avoid seeing the doctor for long and get medications prescribed if your cold doesn't seem to go away. Do not ignore any prolonged symptoms for your and your baby's safety.
  • A fever reaching 102 degrees or more
  • Cold symptoms interfering with your sleep or appetite
  • A yellowish or greenish sputum
  • Symptoms lasting more than a week.
Lastly, remember if you have already taken any of the medications, DO NOT PANIC. It is very unlikely that any harm was caused by one or two doses of the medicine, but if you are still concerned, consult your doctor.
